Elementary OS是一款基于 Ubuntu 精心打磨美化的桌面 Linux 發行版，號稱 “最美的 Linux”。 Elementary 最早是 Ubuntu 的一個美化主題項目，現在成了獨立的發行版。
Elementary OS 由設計師主導開發，在風格上有點類似Mac OS（panel + dock），并且使用了Chrome OS 的應用菜單設計，所以能在elementary OS Luna 里面看到Mac OS + ChromeOS + Ubuntu + Gnome Shell 的身影，而系統的核心依然是 Ubuntu，完全兼容該系統的所有軟件包。
elementary OS 從界面外觀到系統的各種設計元素都很精美。Elementary OS 設計精美的 Ubuntu 衍生版 Linux 系統：為了統一設計風格， elementary OS 在默認軟件選擇上有點非主流，瀏覽器并沒有采用常見的 Chrome 或FireFox，而是采用了 Midori，郵件程序用的是 Geary Mail 而非 ThunderBird，終端用的是 Pantheon Terminal，文本編輯器用的是 Scratch，音樂播放器使用的是 noise，文件管理器是 Pantheon Files 等等。
elementary OS是一個基于Ubuntu的Linux發行版，使用基于GNOME的桌面系統，以及命名為Pantheon的shell。 這個桌面系統出眾的原因是比GNOME Shell更加簡潔，并且深度集成了其他elementary OS應用程序，如Plank（一個基于Docky的Dock）、Midori（默認的網頁瀏覽器）或Scratch（一個簡單的文本編輯器）。該發行版使 用基于Mutter的Gala作為其窗口管理器。elementary OS Luna 是elementary OS 最新的版本號。
